"It's gone!" Hissed Cyan, casting the empty jar aside in disgust.

"No, it's a trap," a chilling voice called from the shadows.

Mrinx drew her sword and faced the darkness while Cyan dropped to a defensive crouch.

"Looking for this?" Mrinx whirled to see Frost standing in the doorway, holding the purple gem shard in her hand, a smirk played on her lips.

Cyan growled ferociously and moved to pounce but Mrinx stepped in her way. "Keep your cool, Cyan," she whispered. "Who's behind us?"

Cyan cast a glance backwards and shook her head. "I can't make him out."

"Alright, what do you want, Frost?" Mrinx called out.

Frost shrugged nonchalantly. "Same as always."

Mrinx frowned. "You know the answer to that. You'll never get it."

"Not willingly, perhaps." Frost snapped her fingers and a circle of flame burst onto the floor around Mrinx and Cyan. Mrinx gasped in surprise. A red Myote suddenly burst through the wall of flame and pinned Cyan to the ground, his claws wrapped tightly around her throat. In the same instant Mrinx felt ice wrap around her body. They've grown stronger, she thought, struggling uselessly.

"You can't fight us," said Frost cooly. "We've been improved."

Cyan choked and gasped for air as she struggled under Karza's weight. The Red Myote's beady eyes sparkled with delight as he watched Cyan grow weaker and weaker.

"No!" Mrinx cried, fighting the chill of the ice that threatened to freeze her to her core. Her grew spotty and dark as ice crept from her shoulders to her face. Closing her eyes, Mrinx tried to focus on her gem, calling for the power to escape. The cold bit into her mind, disrupting her thoughts. Bitter rage filled Mrinx, Why won't it work?

A scream pierced the air and instantly Mrinx felt the ice that held her turn to droplets of water from the heat of the flame. Seizing the opportunity, Mrinx quickly cast a bolt of energy at Karza, blowing him from atop of Cyan and through the wall of fire.

"Cyan!" Mrinx fell to her sister's side and, placing an ear to Cyan's chest, lifted her gently. Please be alive, she prayed.

Cyan's heartbeat was weak, but still there. Letting out a sigh of relief, Mrinx lowered her sister to the floor and turned her attention to their attackers.

The wall of flame was too dense to see through, but Mrinx could hear growling and snarling on the other side. Sucking in a breath, she dove through - the flames licked hungrily at her fur.

Once on the other side, Mrinx could not believe her eyes. Frost lay in a crumpled heap in the doorway and Karza was battling ferociously with a Myote Mrinx had never seen before. He was dressed in black with a pearl-white mask that hid his face and his dark brown hair was pinned up with green-tipped plumes. The stranger slashed Karza across the face with his claws, sending the red-furred Myote sprawling across the room and tumbling over Frost's body. Karza rolled then scrambled to a crouch.

"This is not over!" he hissed threateningly before dashing off. As soon as Karza departed, the fire surrounding Cyan died. The stranger turned to face Mrinx with fierce green eyes. For an instant, Mrinx thought she saw somethign else in his eyes. Surprise, maybe? The stranger's gaze fell to Mrinx's necklace and her hand instinctively closed around the star.

"I-I must help my sister," Mrinx said, turning quickly back to Cyan. The stranger fell in beside her, touching Mrinx's arm gently.

"You must take this," he said, placing the purple shard in her hand.

Mrinx looked curiously at the tan-furred Myote. "Who are you?"

The stranger looked Mrinx with sadness in his eyes before his expression hardened.

Raising to his feet, the stranger lifted the hood of his cloak to cover his masked face in shadow. "You must see to Cyan now," he said. Without another word, the stranger walked from the chamber.

Cyan coughed weakly and rolled to her side. "Mrinx," she croaked. "What happened?"

"Shh..." Mrinx soothed. "Save your strength. I'll tell you once we get out of here."

Propping Cyan up with a shoulder, Mrinx helped her sister to her feet.

Cyan's eyes fell to Frost's lifeless form. "You did this?"

Mrinx shook her head. "No... someone else did."

"Who?"

"I don't know... but I think we'll see him again." The pair stepped carefully around Frost's body and made their way up the passage.
From part of one of the Myote stories I am writing. :)
Done in pencil.

I've included an excerpt... Don't judge me for how bad it is. It's a rough draft. :)
